Among the many distinctive features of our Terminal there is one that is often overlooked: the management of dangerous goods.
VTE was one of the first Italian Terminals to introduce a computerized management system for the handling of dangerous goods and the relative safety features to be adopted. The system in question is called ‘Hackpack’, and it allows a risk assessment in real time for all the operations involved in the movement and storage of “dangerous goods” carried out daily at the port. The system can be managed by the safety operators from either a desktop or on the go from a tablet.
The dangerous goods are subdivided into categories based on danger, and for each of these categories there is a Safety Data Sheet outlining the procedures to be followed in the event of danger, also available online by consulting the Hackpack system. The operators are aware of the exact location of the special containers and their content at all times. This is fundamental safety aspect in order to handle the goods that require special precautions in the best way possible. It is worth noting that when we speak about dangerous goods we are referring to products that are meant for industry as well as products for daily use like perfume and detergent.
The commitment of VTE for the management of dangerous goods goes beyond our Terminal. We are working in conjunction with the relevant authorities to promote standards to be adopted on a national level. These standards will allow a greater harmony between all the Italian ports for the management of such a delicate aspect of port activity.
